What were you expecting when Channel 4 announced they were going to release a rival to the mega-uber-stonkingly successful Skins, but taking on the epic phenomina of the super hero genre? Admittedly you probably weren’t expecting the greatest show on the E4 line-up, but you’re going to be pleasantly surprised…
Misfits is the brain-child of TV drama magnate Howard Overman (of Spooks, Merlin and Deamons acclaim) and, however nicely C4 have branded it in with the Skins-likes, it really is a world away from the rebel-porn that was Skins. The series follows 5 young people serving up anti-social community orders who get hit by a freak lighting storm, leaving them all (apart - so far - from the leading guy Nathan) with frankly weird super-powers.
Whilst most super heros get bright spandex, these guys are stuck with their orange community serivce jump-suits and left alone to tackle the repecussions of their very intimate super-powers.
Of the two episodes so far, I’m already hooked. Not only is the storyline a fresh invention of a tiresome annecdote, but the series is aesthetically amazing, which no doubt adds to the attraction. One to watch… I’ll keep posting.
